Would putting a really cheap airstone run by a really cheap pump in the sump be as efficient at putting O2 into the water as buying an expensive deep water pump and trying to hide the stone in my tank?

I don't think that will work at all b/c ur not aggitating the surface of the water in the tank ur just doing this in the sump.

Yea, the gas exchange is done by aggitation of the water at the surface of your tank. This can be done by the filter return, or the supp return. I dont have any air stones in my tank, a powerhead and filter returns work fine.
