i havent been - but my best friend used to have Red back in highschool and he was doing a tank swap and put his 7-8" red in a big plastic bag (dont ask why - he was young and dumb) and was holding it at the bottom of the bag and his Red came down and bit through the bag into his thumb and took 1 hell of a nice chunk out - he's got quite a nice scar too.

I got bitten transfering my 10" red to another tank. He fell through the net by the new tank so I thought I can give him a boost up and he bit the side of my middle finger. My skin was hanging by the skin, luckily it held together.

I've never been bit, but once i was cleaning my tank and wasn't paying enough attention and i was "slapped" by my gold piranha, as if he was just trying to move me away from it. It definately accomplished it's task,...momentarily

I was cleaning my tank and i nudged one of my red's so i could vac in the corner. And he took off freaking out. Well i finished up and went over to the other side. And noticed one of my pieces of slate that was covering up my plants and air stone was moved. So i grabbed it and felt the slate vibrate fiercely. So i ripped my hand out. I had not been bitten. But almost. The red when he freaked lodged himself under the slate and got stuck.
His head was pretty damb close to the place where i grabbed. But that was the closest i came.

Never by my piranhas but...
Back in my drinking days , I reached into my 8' Burmese Pythons cage to move the water dish that the rat was hiding behind and wham!! I had a mouthful of teeth sunk into my hand just above my thumb. Bottom jaw was into the palm of my hand and the top was over the top of my hand and the snakes had three wraps around my wrist and arm. I tried the dog trick of putting my finger and thumb of my left hand into the corners of the snakes mouth and ended up with my index finger and thumb stuck on the rear teeth in the pythons mouth. As soon as I picked her up from the cage she released. I was pouring blood from the forth rows of teeth on the top of my hand.
Ahhhh , the snake days....
I was nipped once by my 3' Spectacled Caiman too, just a nip and release.
both were alcohol related.
I've had far fewer "Stupid Human Tricks" since then.
I'm not looking forward to a bite from a Piranha so I'll be as careful and attentive as I can when dealing with them.

From my experience, I think you would have to work pretty hard to get bit when they are in the water.
I'd agree. Mine know that they are supposed to go to the other end of the tank when my arm is in the water and they've never disobeyed. They have tried to get over though... I just make some quick movements though and they turn back.
