Which species can live humanely in a 55 gallon when full grown? And are red belly the only species that can lived in a shoal?

A small Serra species could live in a 55... something like a Sanchezi, or a pair of reds.

No, the Pygocentrus species live in groups. A few Serrasalimus do as well, but not many.
Do any of the smaller Serrasalimus species live in groups? I keep finding mixed info.

By "reds", do you mean red bellies? Too many common names out there.

I think I'm just going to do a larger tank.

A cohab with smaller Serrasalamus specis is always risky... sometimes it will work for months, and sometimes a day. Either way it always ends in death.

You could also get a small rhombeus or serra species and upgrade the tank in a year or so.
You're right, it's not worth it.

I think I'll go with red bellies, caribas, or a single sanchezi.

I like that cariba are said to not be as spooky as the red bellies. I was afraid my red belies, back when I had them, were going to knock themselves out against the side of the tank.

Maybe this way I can keep it planted. Have to research their care first, though. And will be going with a larger tank.

I know.
I'll get carnivore gloves and a long aquascape tool.

Wouldnt worry about the gloves unless you are handling them out of water... I put my arms in my 14" Rhoms tank all the time, and he really just goes to the other end of the tank. Might be because I have had him so long and from a small size but... have never had an issue with any species wanting to directly attack your hand.
Whatever you decide to go with, CaptMicha, let us know how it goes!
