what power head would be great for a 48 long UK 50g holding 5 red bellies from juvi til they are about 6 inches.

Also how do they work do i have to have it attached to anything or does it just stick on my tank.

A powerhead is a submergible pump: it's sole purpose is to create water currents. Most models are attached to one of the tank walls with a couple of suction cups.
For a 50g tank, a 200-300gph would be fine.

Yeah, that's a good choice.
Basically, most of the quality brands (Hagen, Eheim, to name a few) make powerheads, so as long as you get one from a good make, it doesn't really make that much of a difference.
btw: in my Redbelly tank I have a 325gph Sicce powerhead - maybe not as wellknown as Eheim, but it works great (and was quite cheap).
