I actually got an answer from my first post. Sorry, I was just getting really worried. But it's cool now.

I accidentally broke one of those a while back, and the red stuff that oozed out smelled pretty much like gasoline, so I don't think it's mercury... It also leaked in the tank a bit, but I never saw any ill-effects.
