Back wen they wer babies, I had 4 reds. The biggest one ended up taking a chunk out of each of the others bellies and left permanent scars. I returned him to the lfs. Anyway that was a while ago and they have healed, but 2 of my reds lost their tiny ventral fins in the bite. U see a round semi-circle groove wer the fins were. So do they need those fins to live well? What are they used for?

My former champ Ed (a 9" Red that died last summer) had the same - I raised him since he was about an inch, and he has always dominated the pack, being the largest and thickest, most agressive, most active and most interactive of the bunch.
There's no need for concern!

btw: I've seen more piranha's without ventral fins, so I don't think their presence is vital. I'm not exactly sure what they are used for, but they do just fine without them...
