well i've had a young black rhom since late summer/ early fall . he's develping nice red eyes and gradually losing his spots as he nears six inches. he's a great looking little fish, but he's been very skittish and shy ever since i bought him. no surpirse there. he's in a 55 gal. all by himself. he has this corner on the front left he sits in whenever it's daylight out or the tank lights are on. i think it's because he can see the whole room from there and it's near the power head. it's his spot and he loves it. he never leaves unless he's doing his nighttime patrolling or foraging for a bite to eat.
recently he has appeared way less nervous when i walk by. i'm pleased becasue i was getting really discouraged with his temperment, thinking he should be out of his shell by now. i decided to see what would happen if i made the magfloat infiltrate his corner and perform irritating maneuvers there. in short, i'm taking his newfound confidence for a test drive.
let me tell you he didn't like it one bit. my hitherto shy and meek rhom got pissed. he really lost his temper when i pulled this.
i moved the magfloat around his area and wiggled it and rattled it and generally tried to be as annoying and invasive as possible with it. he lost his sh*t! first he started darting around. then he started charging it. when i didn't back it out of his corner he began getting a swimming start and ramming it with his head and body......hard. when i continued to annoy him with it, he charged in and bit it so hard the noise made me jump. it was like a loud crack noise every time he did it. i stopped because i was worried he'd cut his lip or break a tooth at the rate he was charging and biting at this point. i'm so proud of him. he's finally becoming a nice aggressive and territorial rhom after all this time.
if anyone reads this who has a skittish young rhom, don't give up on him. it has been five or six months since i bought him and he's just now getting some attitude.

here he is in his days of shyness and cowardice. he still looks the same, only now he has a tendency to fly into fits of rage when his territory is violated.
