When I first set up my 55 gal tank, I put 5 tiger barbs in there (all dead now, killed by the oscars), and my ammonia level barelywent up at all and i checked it every day. No fish died from bad water quality. Why didn't I get this rapid increase in ammonia level when first setting up this tank? I added more fish as soon as about 2 weeks after and they were fine too (of course dead now too).

Was this a brand new setup with new gravel and filters?
