I am buying my uncle/godfather a portable satellite radio for his 60th bday which is only a couple days after Xmas. He goes ice fishing a lot during the winter and I thought it would be something cool to have with him. But I don't own either and don't know which to go with.

Does anyone have opinions on which to go with? And please don't mention Howard Stern as a deciding factor - I seriously doubt my uncle will be listening to anything that guy has to talk about.

I've heard XM is better but am not sure. I guess the one with the best sports package would probably be ideal, but a good selection of music chanels is always important.

Thanks.

Thanks for posting about what is of zero value to the convo and what I asked to leave out because it's irrelevant.

I put that in on purpose, I think Howard has alot to do with people knowing about sat. radio due to all the hype he recieved. I went with Sirius for obvious reasons. However whatever you go with i'm sure your uncle will be pleased, there are probably 3 or 4 stations playing the music he likes, w/o commercials. As far as sports goes, Sirius offers some sports that XM doesnt and vice versa. They each offer portable units, so he should be able to recieve the signal wherever he does his fishing. I go to the desert alot out here in So. Cal and recieve perfect reception, where with terrestrial radio theres no chance.

Its funny how people say one or the other hands down when they havent given the other one a shot, like radio fanboys

Cool. I'll have to do some comparison on what's offerred between the two in terms of sports... I heard XM is getting exclusive rights to the NHL as of '08? Any validity to this?

My uncle's a hockey, football and huge baseball fan. Though I think for ice fishing hockey will be the most in line with the season.

as far as content for the elderly id say xm and sirius are about equal you main concern should be the quailty f the portable players i have an xm portable the pioneer inno its a pretty good product the only complaint i have is the battery life but a better option might be to get one of the unts that is compatable with the boom boxes and car or home bases..

again i belive both have these products however from what i have seen xm has the better boom box..

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Belkin-XM-A...roductDetail.do

this one looks to be best for somethign that might be "in the elements" theres a slding cover to protect the head unit

anther consideration is that finacially while both companies are fighting to reach a piont where there actually making a profit xm is doing better, they have both been growing at about equal rates..

im not sure how much sirius charges a month, xm is 12 and ghcae month to month but if you pay for a longer periods of time at once you save..

sports wise xm has abseball which has got to be the best sport for radio and im pretty sure they have hockey i know they have some hocky talk radio they also have all the saem news stuff as sirius
