i just purchased a new 55 gal and i was wonderin if i should use sand or not?? i saw some pretty awesome sand bottom tanks, but it also sounds like they are hard to maintain...... so i have a few questions..... has anyone successfully used play sand in their tank??? does sand show fecies (piranha sh*t) good, or does it just blend in??? what kind of number does it do on filters??? thanks for the help

Definately.

As far as cleaning goes: if you have enough circulation in there all the crap and stuff accumulates in one or two spots and actually cuts the time it takes to clean a gravel substrate by a hell of a lot. I cleaned mine today (120g all sand) and it took about 2 minuites.

Most people use play sand. It is the cheapest. You just have to make sure you rinse it well before adding it to your tank.
