i am sure there are types of rocks that you should use in a fish tank.

so what types would those be ?
how would you prepare rocks that you can use ?
will they change water conditions?

any information would be great thanks

Some rocks change the PH or has minerals that will dissolve in water. I personally just get smooth rocks from the rivers or ocean and check the PH daily for a week to see if anything adverse happens. I also treat them like driftwood before I add them in the tank. Place in pot and boil for an hour. Also makes great rock stew.

All I have now is a piece of lava rock, half buried underneath a piece of drift wood. I have some beach pebbles lying around, but I think they would cramp the tank too much...

Like RedShoal said, be careful what sort of rocks you drop in your tank: many calcium-rich rocks will increase the water's pH, which might have negative consequences to your fish's well-being, so be aware of what you want to use...
