What can i do about it?

i have seen chemicals but im not keen on tipping anything in the water. my test showed the highest level of hardness it could measure, i wouldnt know if it was off the scale or not!

what kino of gravel or decor you have?how 'hard' is your tap water?

i dont have the reading here, but 3 purple pads meant very hard. one for some hardness too for hard, three for very hard.

i also have sand as my substrate, with three lots of plants, thats it at the moment. next will be more plants and some driftwood

Water softening pillows don't actually make your water less hard, they just make it look less hard on test kits. What the pillows do is exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium, so there is still alot of "hardness" in your water, just not any that would show up on a test kit.

You could use rainwater, distilled water, R/O water or water with peat soaked in it to mix with tap water for water changes to bring your hardness down.
