I just set up my 55 gallon tank yesterday, and i put 30 guppies in there to speed up the biological process a little as well as putting the bio filter additives. I was just wondering how long it would probably take, as well as when its all said and done, what my General Hardness levels should be at, and if i should use chemicals to lower it. Its at 6 degrees right now on the second day of the tank being set up.

Wthout bio-spira or bringing along some established media/gravel from another running tank, you could be waiting for upto a month. Sometimrs, although rarely, longer.

As far as water chemistry goes you are best keeping it where it is than messing about. The general hardness will not badly effect the P's health, your GH is a lot closer to whats ideal than most peoples.

Same goes for anything else. If its not extreme then your fish will adjust to it and it won't be a problem. Rapidly changing the water chemistry can be fatal and trying to tweek various levels can cause crashes and random changes.

Best advice would be not to mess with it.

i put my P's in right away, and they survived the cycle no problem.
but i would advise you not to do that, because it is risky
