i was wondering if adding bio balls in my overflow box would be an effective way of adding more biological filtration. the water drips down making a lot of noise, so it could possibly lower the noise level. i thought i'd ask here first before wasting money on it. i think i would need like 200 bioballs to fill up the 6" x 6" x 24" overflow.

also, what about debris getting stuck in the bio balls. ex: pieces of chicken. would i have to clean it on a regular basis or would it break down without harming my params.

thanks

i do believe i have enough in my filter, but i recently saw a set up that had bio balls in their overflow as well as in the filter. i was jsut wondering if i should do the same, that is why im asking before doing so.
is more is better???

I highly recomend this, I have a 180 and I filled the bottom half of my over flow with bio balls and I filled the top half with filter floss which acts as a pre filter and stops anything bad from getting in the bio balls, it is also really easy to clean it out then because you can just pull the filter floss out of the top of the over flow once a month or so, I just wait till mine is all brown and gross, not only does it provide more filtration but it will make your tank amost silent, all you can hear in mine is the pump.

sounds like a good idea. I have the cylinder shaped prefilters on my bulkheads, and they get clogged too much now. I do clean them, but they are so dirty, they clog up faster and faster each time. BIOballs, won't clog, they are separate, small and fairly easy to clean. I'll try it, or someting similar. I'd really like to get rid of that gurgling sound too.
