I bought a new oscar and hes currently housed with full grown tiger barbs, hes not even 3". my question is how long would the tiger barbs be safe in that tank? in other words at what size would the oscar want to snack on little guys so were I can remove them.

Maybe even own the males sooner since their tadbit shorter and slimmer.

IMO Guppies, Rosies, Danios, Small Tetras, Small Barbs, are all owned pass 4 to 4 1/2".

let the oscar get used to the tank. he will have then for lunch.

Well, he will be able to actually eat the tiger barbs at around 4 to 5 inches so you aren't that far away, and if I were you, I would expect vigerous abuse to your tiger barbs from the Oscar from now to 5 inches until he eats them. He may even "beat" them to death.
