Yeah an airstone is what I use. I dont have a powerhead in my tanks. I shoul;d probably get one.

it can be hooked up to an undergravel i dont do that personally i think p's are to messy for undergravel filtration and i use sand
I couldn't agree more.
Years ago I had an undergravel filter in my pygo tank... and as you can imagine, the buildup under the plates was astronomical.
I could never get the nitrate level down... even with weekly 50% water changes.

I took out the plates (Huge pain in the ass... required draining the tank, removing everything...)
But my nitrate level was able to be kept in check ever since.

I like a powerhead operating for a little time each day... preferably in the morning, set to a timer.

Also, some powerheads like AquaClear, have "quickfilter" attachments to compensate for any lack of filtration that you might be missing by not having an undergravel filter.

the purpose is to add current to the tank, whictch is eater circulation. abd It also gives out c02
