I am currently adding a Aquaclear 5000 powerhead to my setup. It has a max rating of almost a 1000 gph. But it does not have a built in flow control. Could I make mine own (valve) without damaging the pump in any way?

i have a powerhead 901 that does not have a valve also but it has a water flow adapter that i just angle in different areas. i put it aiming down in the daytime and pointing up in the nightime till morning
