Hey! pretty soon I'm going to be getting piranhas and I'll be getting a 40 gal. I really want to keep 3 but I've heard that the rule is 20 gallons per fish.I'm thinking of buying them small( like around 2" or so) to watch them grow. How long will I be able to have them for before they getto big for the tank?
Also, What kind of filters would you recomend getting for them? I'd like the water to be nice and clear. Plus if you could fill me in on some information like Ph, Feeding and tank setup, that would be great!
I've waited so long to get piranhas and now I can finally get them. Oh ya, I will be getting red bellied piranha. Thanks!!!!!

Welcome to to the site and being a new Piranha owner!!!

For your 40 gal, most would say 2.. but depending on the temperment or the individual fish, 3 might do well.
For filters, you can have a combination of powerheads w/prefilters, external, UFG (undergravel filter), and canisters. For your 40 gal, Id go with an AC 400 external and an AC 302 powerhead. PH levels are at a steady 7.0. At 2" these guys will rapidly grow up to 5-6" within months, but slower after that. Best foods to give at that age would be freeze dried krill, brine shrimp, bllod worms, and often guppies or small feeders to excercise them on being the terror that they are.

Good luck, enjoy and hope for the best with your new Ps!!! YOu'll have more opinions after this one, but ALWAYS feel free to ask any of us questions!!!

i would say 3 also but you will probably have to upgradfe within a year or so .and the rest of the question was answered by rhomzilla but imo a steady ph within the 6.5-7.5 range is ok
