what do you guys think about this. i am going to be adding new substrate to the tank sunday and i think i'm gonna try a mixture of:

2 parts natural gravel
1 part silica sand
1 part flourite

now should i mix the three all together? or should i have the flourite on the bottom by itself than mix the sand and gravel ontop of it?

I prefer to have the flourite at the bottom but however you place them try not to create anaerobic environment with the sand in order to have the nessecary water virculation for your plants and in order not to have anaerobic bacterials....

The sand gets compacted and water flow cannot reach certain areas of the sand; areas of the sand get "stagnant." This sets up an environment for anaerobic bacteria to grow which can produce noxious gasses that are harmful to both fish and people.

Edit: BTW, I'd avoid silica sand. Silica= silicates= horrible alage problems.

so shoul di juse use the gravel and flourite? or is there a good sand to use?
