Im not sure what breed my piranha are, the lady at the pet store just said they were "piranha" so i dunno. They are still really small, like the size of nickels. But they are all silver, with little black dots, and black tips on there fins, anyone knokw what they are?

Secondly, is a black light bad for these guys?

Third, what else can i put in the tank with these guys?

Thanks all.

Sounds like you have little reds. I have heard a black light can damage the eyes. You can put a pleco with them but I would not add anything else until they get a little bigger and you have time to learn more about them.
I agree. You can add a pleco but don't until your piranhas get a little bigger. You wouldn't want the pleco sucking up your piranhas.

I never had a problem with that when I got my tiny reds, but the pleco was only about 3 inches. Now he is in my spilo tank and doing fine, although he is still very small.

I would go find a bristle nose pleco, which goes great with Ps and is always hungry as hell. I have seen pet stores with 12 inch plecos kept with quater sized RBPs so i dont think that they are going to get sucked up. Better to get them used to each other at an early age. Black lights are bad for the Piranhas eyes and they look horrible on a tank anyway.

Welcome to the site,
it sounds like you have red belly piranhas, but their are plenty of pics on this site to compare them with, or send in a pic.
as for tankmates, nothing is guarenteed, if you add any fish, it is reccomended that it is larger than the piranhas, and that remove the origional fish from the tank and change the tank design and add all fish together when adding any new fish.
Plecos have commenly been kept with piranhas, but these do sometimes get eaten, other commen tankmates are silver dollers, pacus, and tetras.
I have a severum with my red bellys.
but any fish added to a piranha tank is potentially on the menu.
they don't really like light, so you should either have no lights, or dim a light for them.
they will grow fast, until they are around 5-6" then they will slow down a bit, and you will need quite a large tank when they are bigger.

Oh, and fluffy is a good name for a piranha.

Red belly Piranhas are the most comonly sold ones at LFS, chances are they are RBP.
As for teh black light you mention I would not do it as some people say it can cause eye damage to your fish. I am not sure if it was official information, but i would prefer the use of flouresent tubing anyways

A blacklight on a tank doesn't even look good. And even though it may be cool for a lil while, I dont think anyone would like to live in a blacklight world, so why do it to your p's. I would definately use dim lights to start with and slowly allow more light into the tank. By not using any light, you would just give your p's the bad habit of being very skittish when bigger of not only light but people as well.

Good Luck

does sound like reds as people have said and yes plecos can last with reds .i have a 12'' common pleco with my reds between 5-8'' but he does not do much during the day so it will not add more movement to the tank.

Adding tank mates in my experiance is better when the p's are young as they grow with the other fish getting used to them adding them when the reds are much bigger can usually end with tankmate being killed .also make sure that the tank mate is unable to eat your p's also as both these have happended to me i lost a pleco to my reds i had previously and lost 2 baby reds to a red belly pacu which was @3-4 '' and they reds were @ 1''
and both occasions was pretty pissed with myself for needlesly (sp) loosing fish
