I just picked up a new Emperor 400 for my 55G. Can I just replace the exisiting filter (it was a smaller one, not an Emp). Would this be a problem or do I have to run both at the same time. I am assuming that i can just replace it without a problem since you have to replace cartridges in your power filters all the time and there is no cultures on them?

It really doesnt matter cause your tank is already cycled right?

I have a 55 and emp 400, i also have a regent aquatech 30-60 that came with the walmart "kit", with both filters running, its amazing!! i would say run both of them. Then again i dont know what kind of fish you have or how many, etc.

It is not the tank that is cycled, it is mainly the filters. The bacteria that make up the cycle are mainly found in you filter media , there is some in your gravel, on driftwood, ect.. but mainly in your filter media, so you should never just change filters because you will loose too much bacteria and could uncycle your tank. At least this is my understanding of the cycle.
