ok im going to be getting a tank this weekend and im a total newbie when it comes to plants. i want to plant half of the tank which will be about 36 inches being that the tank is 6ft long. the lightin in the tank will be relatively dim.. not too bright but not totally dark.. i will be using natural gravel as a substrate. what else can i do to promote plant growth and what are the best plants that are suitable for low lighting and cover a decent amount of area. thanks a lot

Java moss, java ferns and vals are all good low light plants. Java moss can cover a lot of area, it can grow like mad.
You should use plant fertilizer which you can get at lfs.
A co2 system can be used also but that is much more advanced and a co2 system is only necessary if you have a very heavily planted tank.
So just get some vals, moss and ferns or whatever you can find that is a low light plant. Search this site and others to find low light plants that you like and dont forget the fertilizer.
