I have several fisihing spots around my area that have Muskies and Pikes that are in season to fish...I was considering keeping a small one and grow it out as long as I could and release it once it's bigger....Anyone keep one of these fish before?
catch pickerel instead. Redfin and grass pickerel only reach 12" in length. Chain pickerel get about 3 feet. Northern pikes get what, 5 feet? they'd outgrow any tank you have too fast, I think
also keep in mind that most of these species--especially pike and muskie-- need temperate water, if the temp gets much above 70 degrees they will start dying on you.
as for how it is to keep any of these fish in an aquarium... they are excellent predators of small prey that fits in their mouth. However, they are prone to getting bullied by anything that doesn't, as they will not defend themselves. Cichlids and sunfish (ie bluegill, bass, etc) would give these placid pikes way too much misery.
