I measured the biggest red I have tonight, and he is 9 3/4" total length, from the front of his face to the end of the tail. had a look at his teeth to, never again will I stick my bare hand in the same tank as him again (yes, I used to almost on a daily basis to fix plants that they had moved out of the gravel)

Nice! That should make it over 8" SL then? Ah don't worry too much about putting your hand in there, just keep an eye on him and make sure he's not hungry when you do!

If you ever decide to do this again, measure from snout and not the jaw which is always open and will give you a false reading. From there measure to the end of the fleshy part where the tail begins (hypural plate), for SL (=standard length).

I would not use the lateral line as it is NOT straight. And since we want accuracy, use a caliper instead not a ruler.

I really dont plan on measuring him again, but if I do, I will do it only to the begining of the tail. I do have some pics, just gotta get the film developed so I can get one of those picture cd's
