To keep most plants healthy I've read you need approx. 2-3 watts per gallon of water and more if you have an abnormally tall tank. Also, you need to be using lights in the 6500 or 6700K wavelength for optimal growth.

I dont know if home depot sells those types of bulbs, Id check before you purchased anything, power compact lights may be a better option if youre seriously looking to grow plants in your tank.
