I've had this problem with my altuvei and my rhom as well. Mine are around 4-5 inches total length and are still pretty shy. I've had my altuvei for awhile and he's doing better with his shyness that he used to but he still likes to hide sometimes when I turn out the light. As for being nocturnal I have my suspicions at least about my altuvei as he seems to be very active at night. I'll wake up and he'll be swimming near my side of the tank looking at me. I wonder if he even sleeps at all.

Dont sweat it Nitro. Most Rhoms are shy to eat in front of their owners. I have 2 Rhoms.. one who would give a show as soon as you drop a feeder in there, while the other doesnt even look their way until im out of the room or when im asleep at night. I even patiently waited for an hr just try and take a pix of his going after a feeder. Its a common thing most would tell you.

I've had my rhom for about 1 1/2 yrs now. Probably only seen it eat in front of me once. When the light goes out however thats a different story. Really active and swimming all over the tank. I've just (this morning) changed the lighting to lower level tubes in the hope that it will increase it's activity level. I'd really like a 10"+ rhom, but don't want an inactive one. And the investment of a new tank and not being able to purchase a fish without first seeing it ( i'll order through the UKPIRANHACLUB), kinda puts me off. Ah well.
