I would say it isnt safe, only because I have read a book that listed what type of wood can go into fish tanks. You want a wood that wont rot, like petrified wood, or malasian drift wood, etc... Not sure on the poison factor...I would try keeping it in a feeder fish tank, or sick tank, and see how it holds up.
