One of my reds chills at the top right corner or my tank by himself. He is fine when he is with the other reds but for some reason he just goes up there. I have a tall sword type plant that gives him some cover but I just don't see why. He does have one messed up eye, it was always that way I didn't notice until it was to late to take him back. All my reds seem to swim in the top half of my tank a lot during the day and night. Anyway just though I would share. Give me some feedback if you want.

does he try to breath air with his face up at the surface of the water? if not then hes probably just scared for his life.

I agree with Wes, he may be short of air...the fact that they swim mostly near the surface means you're probably not getting enough oxygen to your water. Try picking up some powerheads or bubblers in order to introduce more oxygen through surface agitation.

I don't think you have an oxygen problem. I think it's just claimed its territory up there. It is more than likely the weakest or least dominant in there and just has nowhere else to go. But, if you do want to try putting some Oxy in there don't bother buying new toys, just lower your water level a bit so that the returning water from your filter agitates the surface more (assuming you own a waterfall filter) . If you notice an improvement, then go buy the goods

i have six p's in my tank and when they are not all together one of them takes of in the corner alone also

I might have to go with Cypher on this one. Aside from thinking it might be the temp, its also a possibility that he is/might be the weakest link and have no other spot to chill in because all of the other dominant fish have settled in their place. You say he has one messed up eye.. try to see if the good eye is facing the rest of the shoal, while the other weak eye is towards the outside of the tank. That should clearly show he's looking out for himself.

the tank temp is 82 so i don't think thats it , he isn;t the smallest eather just has a messed up eye. and he is usualy alone by himself so i guess hes just a loaner.
