i have a 40 long and am considering going black sand and single rhom. does a forty pound bag sound right for that tank? i read the pinned el twitch sand thread already on washing. is it a total bitch to vaccuum?

40 lbs is good, and no it is not a bitch to clean.

i put 75 lbs in my 55, its a good 2" deep and really easy to vacuum.

I'd say a 50 pound bag should leave you plenty of left overs. Your dimensions are likely similar to my 50 gallon (36 x 20) and I only used maybe two thirds of a 50 pound bag on it.

I've being considering putting sand in a few of my tanks, I've read some fucked up stories of sand killing filters - I find that hard to believe unless you stick the intake right down in the sand.

what i do is 1lbs of sand for every gallon .

The biggest problem is if you have a fish that will kick the sand up into your filter, otherwise its cool

very easy to clean. i actually think that it is alot easier to clean than gravel. i use black sand so all the dirt stays on the top of the tank. 40 lb is more than enouhg for your tank

I use 40 pounds in my 55. You may not need the whole 40 pounds. Not a bitch to clean at all. It's just a bitch on powerheads. I no longer use powerheads on sand tanks.
