Sorry man, no pack in a 55g. When they're young you can put in quite a few, but I wouldn't go over three for life. And if you're looking for the most vicious monsters, you should look into another species such as Rhoms or Brandtii's... any Serra. for that matter remembering though that reds are less territorial than the others. Also, it's not a good idea to house more than one Rhom: they hunt alone in the wild.

You can put 10 little ones and get a bigger tank soon or just buy 2-3 (no more) to stay for a life in your 55g!

The general concensus is three in a 55 gallon tank. But keep in mind that it is approximately 13" front-to-back (less on the inside, most measurements are the outside dimensions) and a full grown piranha will not have much turning room. Granted it takes a long time to have a 12" nattereri, but still something to consider. Have you considered a 50 or a 40 gallon breeder? They offer more space though a little less height, which isn't really an issue in home aquariums.
