I would say 9 adult reds or 5 adult piraya would make a nice shoal.

i have a 125gal and i origanally wanted 9 p's but i have six and managed to get a mating pair so i'm sticking with 6 but 9 would work

9 would work. I have 8 adults in my 125 gal, plus Holleywood had 15 in his shoaling in harmony.
