Hi... I ordered a 180 all glass brand fish tank(72x24x25) today and will be getting it in about a month... I know 8-9 full size reds would be a good fit for life. I've had reds before, I just traded off some bigger ones to clear a tank that I am selling to help pay for the new one. I want to get small ones to start it with this time.... I have a pet store that will sell them to me quarter size for $4.00 a piece. I know they are very aggressive towards one another when small. How many do you guys suggest putting in there to start?? I was thinking like 15-20 and 6-7 monthes from now the weak ones should be weeded out. Think I will have 8-9 good ones out of that many or should I get more or less than 20 to start? Thanks!! Jake

You could do 100 baby reds, but you would have to get down to around 10 when adults.

LOL! If you want them in there "for life", go with 8-9. I dont mind overstocking a bit and you will probably get rid of them before they grow to full size to I would put 15 in there

But thats just me....to be safe do 9.

I have never been a fan of the weeding out theory. I buy as many fish as I plan on keeping alive and not overstock thinking I might loose some. That being said, I would go with 15 and sell or trade in the ones I did not want, getting the number down to 11. I think 11 reds could live comfortably in a 180 with that footprint.

buy 20-30, then start lining up buyers for them for when you start weaning them down, which should start in a couple of months. Slowly remove the ones that dont grow as fast or that seem sick, and that arent colored as nice, in the end you should go with about 8 adults once they are 9"+

8-9 RBs in your tank would be suitable for life, 11-12 would/could be possible also. But MADs idea for putting 100 babies in there wouldn't be a bad idea either. Definately would not reach all of their life expectancies, but as they get bigger, you can most def sell for more than what it was worth and making profits.

If you buy 100 baby piranhas thats 100 dollars just 1 dollar for each fish.. Say 4.99 a fish that's 499.00 right there. If you can offord that go for it though.
Where in the world do you buy $1 fry? The cheapest I ever found was $3, and that a week hatched and unstabled to live.

Thanks guys for all the interesting opinions, 100 babies for sure would be cool for awhile!! That would be crazy! I think I will buy 15 to start it with... Getting down to 8-9 in 6 monthes or so. It'll be about 3 weeks before I have the tank totally setup with the new reds but as soon as I do I will post some pictures. Thanks again! Jake

Probably where you guys might live. Good luck to me and the rest of the folks that live in the same area. To find a breeder here, and who WOULD sell for $1 at that.
