i gotta be honest, i never tested my water either, but my roomate already had fish, so i was assuming the water wasnt bad, and i did cycle my tank first!!!
i did read here that PH does effect coloration of the fish, but unsure of the PH to keep them at!
I love rbp's when they are that small, they are so aggressive!!! they might get skittish as they grow a bit, but they should kick out of it around 5 inches... atleast mine did, and i have heard of others saying the same!!!
