i know this is a really stupid question, but is there any way that a baby gold spilo could live with 3 baby reds, or are the reds food? It would only be tomporary until i could find someone to take the 3 baby reds(someone gave them to me) or should i just try to put them in with the big guys and hope they hide well?

There is a good chance that the reds will get screwed up. But i have seen golds in with reds at lfs fo a few mos. And not too much trouble.

if you have too ..just put alot of cover for them to hide..they will probably get fin nips but they should be alright for a few...your big reds will probably eat the smallest one if you should toss them in there with them

the gold is about 2 inches, if that, and the reds are dime-size, im not too worried about the reds, more the gold.....he should be ok though right?just the reds will get messed up?
Now that you've mentioned the difference in size.. your Reds are more likely to get messed up.

Like PACKman said, give them some hiding space and hope for the best n seing how long your reds might survive. But your not worried, right?? :

Speaking from experience last night I a got a 5" gold spilo. I put him into my red belly tank which consists of eight-6"-8" reds and I can tell you this, it was a disaster. I know it was a stupid thing to do, but it was a freebie and I have heard of situations where they shoal with pygos. Anyway the spilo got the sh*t kicked out of him. They nearly bit of his entire tail off. Luckily I noticed it before they got the whole thing. He is currently in a bucket and I have to step out later to buy a hospital tank. Hopefeully he'll make a full recovery.

Honestly I'm not 100% sure. As a matter of fact on this sites factsheets it states under spilos that some had rare success in mixining pygos with spilos. Anyway I purchased a hospital tank for the spilo and hope to bring him back to normal

I would be skeptical keeping any fin biting species, in this case S. spilopleura with any Pygocentrus for any length of time. A wholesale dealer moves large volumes of fishes, doubt he would keep them together for any length of time (months) especially if they are there to be sold.

In natural waters, both S. spilopleura and P. nattereri are found together, but not in the visual sense as in getting along. The S. spilopleura is a stalker and will behave the same way in the aquario regardless of all the hype you may read about them co-habitating in the home aquario.

Yeah keep that gold away from those reds especially if hes bigger. Nate, youre right shark aquarium does keep them together, they sold me a Medinai and a red instead of two reds. I don't think they are as concerned as a normal hobbyist would be though, and if it were my fish, I'd keep them seperated.
