yeah Emp 400 is pretty quiet. Canister would be your best bet, but hang on back are good if you keep the water level high. Check out your LFS, they should have some Emps on the back of their tanks...

i just got a ac500 for my 55 gallon that i'm starting up and it does have a little rattle in the impeller. When i take the intake tube out it still rattles. Kinda makes me angry since it's brand new. Think this is just my filter or is it like this for anyone else?

I would take it back ASAP. I just bought an ac500 last week and it is perfectly silent (other than water spewing out of it back into the tank)

it's kinda of a pain to return it b/c now i have to ship it back to big als so it's gonna cost me also.

call them first about that. Sometimes they will work with u.
