While your filter is running are the bio-wheels visible or are they under and out of view because of the hinged cover. Can the hinge be opened so the bio-wheels are visible? Specifically for the newer emps

yeah. the new covers don't have the viewing window. So you have to lift the cover to see them. once you have them spinning at the desired speed (via angleing the spray bar) you should just close it again so they don't kick water all over your cover. (if you are running with a cover.)

Why did they get rid of the viewing window? now it creates alot more hassle...

That sucks. I have several older models with the viewing window and flow control. A couple things I find annoying with the older model is that it takes a while to prime and sometimes if the impeller is not sitting right its noisy it does not keep a good suction when the water level decreases below the first extension on the input side.

Makes me wonder if they fixed any of these problems.
