i have a tern who is coloring out oh so beautiful, but he has deep blackish / purple
hum spots after his gills........i have never had a tern before, nor have i seen pics
of a tern who has these........is this normal?

the best ive got / this picture doesnt do justice at all
hes deep purple and the spot you can kinda see, but up close (WOW)

That is a nice and fat Tern. I know that pics normally do not do a fish justice, but even from the pic I can tell he has very nice color.

its just a mood type of thing. my red belly's i had used to do that all the time

Yes, it can be affected by mood, water quality, or other factors. Sometimes they will even have it pernamently. A few of my reds acquired some faint humeral spots when they reached 6" and they are always noticeable.

All my terns have the same dark area behind the gills. Not actualy as dark or prominent as the cariba, but you can deff tell a differance in color in that area. IDK why terns do that.

my terns have those markings also slight, noticable.
