Rbps, as with other fish as well, will tilt sideways in a defensive posturing. They usually do this when they are being threatened or are fairly new in a tank and are not yet comfortable. Usually dimming the lights and doing some take adjusts help, or even just giving them time to adjust to their home.

If they are swimming sideways along rocks and driftwood, chronically scratching themselves. Then you have a problem. It is no big deal if it is a periodic thing. We all need to scratch hell sometimes but if it is perpetual then it could be a symptom of a problem.
