I am thinking about starting a spilo shoal in my soon to be 240 gallon tank. It will be 72 long by 30 wide by 25 high. How many full grown spilos could I safely put in there? I dont want a crowded tank. Also, are they skitterish like reds or can i walk up to the tank without them darting all over? I want to be able watch them eat and put the light on when i wish. Also, how fast do they grow? Do they grow faster than reds?

I can walk in front of my 180 with no problems with the 10 of them at all. But then again, I think they realize that I am the one that feeds them. A school of spilos is not like the reds I used to have. Pretty nice school. Much better the pygo school IMO.

I have 10 3-4 inchers in the 180 right now. I would be happy if 4-5 make it to full breeding sized adults, just to give you an idea. They grow pretty fast. Just about as fast as reds. I have seen growth on mine, up untill this point, of about an inch a month. Im sure it will start to slow down as it does in pygos at around 6 inches or so.

Check my sig for pics of my fish.

mine are not skiddish at all when i go up to the tank they always like come to say hi they will sit there and look at me like i look at them its funny

in a 240 i think you could have quite a few spilos full grown i would think up in the 20's or even higher not sure just makeing a guess

the thing with gold spilos is that sometimes they wont shoal together some do some dont mine shoal fine cuz ive had them since they were 1in big its ezer to shoal them when there small

my spilos grew alot faster than my reds did but it also has to do with there diet too

not sure about exsactly how many you could have in that tank but im sure its up there

hoped i helped some

I aggree with all of piranha's post except this sentence here. Spilos should not be overstocked like pygos. That is just asking for trouble IMO. In a 240, perhaps Less then 10 FULL sized spilos is a good number IMO. There is a member on pfish.net, BIGWORM, that has 7 good sized ones in a 320 I believe. Like I said before, I expect only 4-5 to reach full size in my 180.

Again, this is just my opinion, based on what I have gathered on these fish from other members and the first hand experience from my school. There are exceptions to the norm for any case. Perhaps something different will work for you.

You may be right, you possibly "could" fit more in there. I think that sometimes when I reply on spilos I give my opinion which is usually biased to offer way more room then neccesary. I have found, from my experiences, that when schooling spilos the more room the better your chances of getting them to "coexist". Frank I think has pointed out to me that a pair of spilos have bred in a 55, so perhaps you can go from there. Again, I prefer to offer more room for spilos, and dont beleive in over packing instead I think underpacking might work out better. Espeacialy since people seem to have problems with spilos.
