I was always under the impression that he was a spilo c.f. but looking at other people who say that have a sanchezi or medinei makes me think that my guy looks exactly like theirs. So either they are wrong, or I am wrong, or I am blind.

S. medinai has a snout similar to most Pygocentrus. S. sanchezi has a snout pointy and the body more compressed than S. medinai. Externally (in terms of color and eye) they are close appearing. My impression of the photo you have is the fish is likely S. sanchezi. Scutes appear large on the belly, S. medinai does not have this feature.
