So i came home from school today to learn that my tank has had yet another outbreak of algae. The brown crap was all over the place.

SO....
1. Is this a result of my lights being on too long?
They are set on a timer for 8hrs everyday. (don't think that is a problem)

2. Too much plant fertilizer? I accidentally spilled some in yesterday...

Any other causes??
I need some help on preventing this in future cuz I hate cleaning this crap off.

Actually I don't think your lights are on long enough. Try 10-12 hours and see if that helps much. How well planted is your tank?

Too much plant fertilizer wouldn't likely cause an algae outbreak unless you went insane with it and REALLY overdid it. Nonetheless, I don't think you'd be looking at brown algae in that case, it'd be green.
