Keep in mind that reds grow very quick. You will need a bigger tank soon, even if you only have 4 reds.

Pacu and reds don't mix.

If you want to mix different kind of piranhas, you have to stay within the pygocentrus genus. So you can mix nattereri, cariba or piraya (but you need a bigger tank of course).

you can try to add a pleco. If you provide enough shelter these have a chance in a piranha tank. But there is not guarantee.

Yeah Boon said it all. You most likely will not to be able to mix your reds with any other kind of fish. Even within the pygo family (caribe, ternetzi, piraya, red) there is cannabalism. I would do a mix of at least one of each in the pygo family. But you definetly need a larger tank soon. Remember the 20 gallon per fish rule. And also with the ternetzi, piraya, and caribe you may even want to do more than 20 gallons per fish because they grow larger than the reds. Especially the piraya.

welcome to the site. you should do more reading on the subject of p's as pets. Begin with the Articles and Tutorials in the Information section at the top of the page. Then, read all of the pinned threads in each forum.

There is a well of info in these places. The answers which you seek can be better understood in this manner!
